Jim smiled down at her. "Hey, I'm going to lay down, with you or without you. I was just giving you the option of staying with me." He wanted to kiss that smirk off her face, but figured that it would sort of ruin his plan to get her to stay.

Pock's eyes were bright with laughter. The corners of her mouth peaked upwards in amusement. "Of course," she said, cocking her head as she did. "Your intentions were perfectly innocent, I am sure." Nonetheless, she took his hand, slipping her shoes off and pulling him gently towards the bed.

"Completely innocent," he said, toeing his own shoes off. His eyes were laughing as he followed her into the bedroom. He sat down on the edge of the bed, waiting for Pock to join him. He smiled up at her.

She smirked down at him. "I highly doubt you have ever been completely innocent," she purred playfully. She took a seat beside him, locking his eyes with hers. He had such lovely eyes, she noted. She was not aware that irises could be so perilously, painfully blue.

Jim pulled her into a kiss, chuckling. He broke the kiss, pushing a piece of hair out of the way. "I've been innocent before," he murmured. He laid down, waiting for Pock to join him.

Pock kissed him gently and affectionately, and when he broke away, she chuckled. "I do not believe you," she said softly. She laid down beside him, draping her arm across his torso. His body was warm beside her, and she was careful of his sling and bandages.

Jim used his good hand to lace their fingers, squeezing gently. "You can not believe me all you want, kitten, but it's true." He smiled over at her, eyes already drooping shut. He hadn't been lying when he'd said he was tired.

He laced their fingers together, and the sensitive nerve endings in her hand were lit ablaze. She turned her face towards him and watched as his eyelids began to fall. It would not be long until he was asleep, and she would lay here holding him until he woke again.

"If you say so," she said quietly.

Jim gave her one last sleepy smile before he drifted off.

Jim stared at the bodies of the crew members he'd lost down on the planet. He looked around, surprised to see Nyota's body, dead, on the floor, next to Pock's prone figure. The scene changed, and suddenly, the crew members, Nyota and Pock - NO POCK NOT HER NO SHE CAN'T BE DEAD! - were on the field where Kodos' men had come up and shot people where they were standing. The words flowed around Jim's head, written and fluttering. 'The revolution is successful.' Jim looked around. Tommy, was staring at him, phaser wound to the chest. "Tommy, no, you didn't die. You're on Planet Q right now!" The words started flowing again, this time with Pock - his wonderful, lovely, beautiful First Officer - staring at him with accusation in those brown eyes that he adored so much. 'Your continued existence represents a threat to the well-being of society. Your lives mean slow death to the more valued members of the colony.' "No, no, this isn't... You weren't..."

"No. Stop. No. Wrong. Weren't there. No."

Eileen took Pock's place and Jim was faced with what he considered his worst failure. The little girl was now a woman, but she binged and binged, and threw up and purged, and there was nothing her sister could do to help her. "Eileen... No, stop, please..." The girl raised the phaser and pointed it at Jim. There was a blast...

...and Jim sat straight up in bed, panting, a scream fading from his lips.

The feelings pouring through Jim's skin from the places where they touched jerked Pock out of what had been a perfectly peaceful sleep. She was immediately awake, her eyes open, trained on the tossing and turning of her still-slumbering partner.

"No," he mumbled, still enraptured by the contents of the dream. "Stop. No. Wrong. Weren't there. No."

She pressed her hand back to his heart. Her shields were as strong as she could make them, and yet still there was a chill in her stomach from the terror and blackness that had invaded Jim's mind.

Pock wondered what he could possibly be seeing that terrified him so. She had seen Jim Kirk face paralyzing situations with a smirk and a shrug, barreling in with guns blazing. What was it about whatever he saw, whatever haunted him, that could make him feel this way? She had not even known him to be capable of such sheer, undiluted fear.

"Jim," she whispered in his ear. "Jim, wake up. This is not real."

He continued to thrash.

Then, he sat up with a cry.

Jim's gaze immediately sought Pock's. He kept his eyes trained on her, trying to assess if she was really there. The dream had felt so real. He shuddered, eyes blurring with tears he refused to shed. He blinked them back, eyes roving over his partner.

Without a word spoken, he reached over and, against his better judgement, pulled her into a hug. His hands trailed down her back to try and assure himself that Pock was alive. That what he'd seen in his dream had been just that: a dream. He buried his face in her neck, breathing in that unique scent that reminded him Pock was alive, and not dead as his brain wanted to make him think that. "You're alive," he murmured. His voice was so soft and muffled by Pock's neck he wasn't sure he'd actually spoken. "You're alive."

Pock met his eyes, her lips slightly parted. Jim's chest was heaving, and on his face was a look of panicked realization, slowly ebbing into sadness and relief as he came to terms with reality. She wondered again what he had seen. What could have affected him so.

He pulled her in, and she thought for a moment of protesting. Pock thought better of it, though. He needed this.

She wrapped her arms around him, holding him tightly as he buried his face in the slope of her neck. Jim was breathing heavily still. He muttered something against her skin that made her blood turn icy. Pock hushed him, rubbing small circles into his back.

"I am here, ashaya," she muttered. "I am fine. You are fine."

Eventually, his breathing evened and smoothed out. He frowned into her neck, feeling her hand on his back. Jim pulled away, not meeting her eyes. She'd seen him in the throws of a nightmare. One that was of the worst time of his life. He didn't know what to say, so he did what he always did: he withdrew.

After all, why would she want to be with him, after all he'd done?

He'd been selfish, starting this relationship with her. She could do so much better than him. So much better. He was sure that there were so many better people that she could be with.

Pock's lips parted slightly in shock.

Why had he pulled away so suddenly?

"Jim..." she said quietly, trailing off. Her hand lifted up, placing itself against the side of her consort's face. She studied the hard lines and the sadness of his eyes. There was a pain in him, she knew, and this was only the tip of it, but she was not afraid of pain. Not when the pleasure, the positive, was him. All of him. Good or bad.

Jim leaned into her hand unconsciously, still not meeting her eyes. He couldn't. He wanted to ask what she saw in him. What she saw when all he saw when he looked in the mirror was a person who'd done nothing but fuck up his entire life. Someone'd who'd had to murder people who were just doing their jobs to get food for him and the others.

What did she see in him? To return his affection and adoration?

Why?

Her thumb stroked the skin beneath her hand gently.

Pock wanted to kiss him. She wanted to pull him close to her again and convince him that she was here, and he was here, and all was well, but she knew that was not what he needed. There was something unsettling his soul.

"Jim," she said again. Her voice was quiet and laced with pleading. "Please look at me."

Jim did as she asked, albeit reluctantly.

The questions still raced through his mind, though he did his best to stop them. Not that, at that moment in time, is best was good enough.

Why me? Why a fuck up?

He met her eyes, and she let out a breath.

"You scared me," she said softly. She leaned forward and planted a kiss against his lips, insistent but still retaining some quality of softness. Her other hand moved to the other side of his face, cupping it gently. "Are you okay?"

His eyes remained open as she kissed him, gently but firmly. He responded purely on instinct and the fact that this was Pock sitting in front of him.

Guilt overwhelmed everything in his mind. He had scared her.

"Yeah. I'm fine."

No, I'm not okay. Everything's gone terribly wrong.

Pock kissed him again, more insistently this time, pulling him into her desperately.

When she pulled away, her face had fallen.

"You are being dishonest," she said, her voice distant. "Why?"

He responded to the kiss again, purely because this was Pock, and he didn't want to disappoint her anymore than he already had. His eyes dropped from hers. "Sorry," he muttered.

Why? Because I'm afraid. I'm afraid that the minute you find out, you'll be gone. When you find out what I did on Tarsus...

She forced him with her hands to meet her eyes again.

"Jim," she said firmly. Her eyes were desperate. "You do not have to talk about your dream if you do not want to, but I implore you, please do not pull away from me like this. Whatever it is, I feel no less for you, and never shall I."

A pause, and then, "But if you desire it, ashaya, I will go."

"No!" he said, voice a mix of fearful, scared and defiant, meeting her eyes. "No..." This time his voice was softer. "Don't go. Please don't..."

Jim took a deep breath and said, "You were dead. In my dream, you were dead. So was Uhura, and the two crew members we lost today. And... And..."

A shudder he couldn't suppress wracked his body.

"And in my dream, we were on Tarsus IV."

At his fearful demand, she met his eyes and nodded slowly. "Then I will stay."

She watched him shiver as he described his dream, one hand still on his face, the other falling to his shoulder. His words washed over her. In that moment, she understood some semblance of what she had felt.

Her mind scrambled for everything she knew about Tarsus IV. The famine, the genocide, the evils that had occurred on that world.

"Why?" she asked slowly.

Pock knew. The puzzle pieces had suddenly clicked in her mind, and she knew what he would say. But she wanted to hear it. She needed him to say it, to confirm it, and she knew that he needed to say it out loud as well.

Jim covered her hand with his own, his head dipping down in shame. "Because I was on Tarsus IV when I was 13."
